PRENATAL CARE CENTER
PROJECT PROPOSAL
In the 2020 Franklinton Target Area Plan proposed by the Columbus government, alarming statistics emerged: Franklinton residents have an average life expectancy of just 60 years— nearly 15 years shorter than the average Ohioan. This stark difference in life expectancy highlights a pressing issue that extends beyond mere numbers. Among all the factors determining life longevity, what particularly caught my attention was the shockingly high infant mortality rate in the neighborhood, referring to the death of a child before their first birthday. Franklinton is currently grappling with an infant mortality rate of 15.2 deaths per 1,000 births, nearly double the Franklin County average, and even triple the national average. These statistics glaringly indicate healthcare disparities within the community, demanding immediate attention and action.
To address these critical issues and nurture healthier beginnings in Franklinton, I propose a prenatal care center that includes a specialized pharmacy with a mini grocery store offering fresh produce, a kitchen for cooking lessons, and a classroom for educational sessions and community gatherings. These components are all meticulously tailored to cater to the unique needs of expectant mothers and their families. The aim of this project is to significantly reduce infant mortality rates and promote healthier births by offering comprehensive prenatal care, nutrition support, and accessible medications. By addressing the root causes of infant mortality and providing a holistic approach to healthcare, I aim to empower expectant mothers with the knowledge and resources they need to give their children the best start in life.
While I aim to create a warm and welcoming physical environment, my primary focus is on nurturing a sense of belonging and community. The clinic's layout and interior design are carefully crafted to promote emotional well-being, drawing inspiration from the principles of neuroarchitecture. By creating a space that combines medical care, access to essential resources, and a welcoming community hub, I hope to offer holistic care, education, and empowerment. The ultimate goal of this project is to support and uplift the mothers and families of Franklinton, ultimately strengthening the bonds within the community.
DESIGN PHILOSOPHY
The Nest's design philosophy revolves around fostering inclusivity, sustainability, and well-being within the community. The project aims to create spaces that embrace diversity, prioritize accessibility, and nurture a sense of belonging for every individual, especially for expectant mothers and their families. The approach intertwines innovative design with a deep respect for heritage and local context, ensuring a seamless blend of functionality, comfort, and aesthetics.
ADAPTIVE REUSE
Aligned with the United Nations Sustainability Goal #3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal #11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), The Nest project endeavors to provide accessible and specialized healthcare while contributing to the revitalization and sustainable growth of Franklinton. The choice of adaptive reuse aligns with sustainability practices by minimizing environmental impact, reducing waste, and preserving the cultural identity of the community. Repurposing an existing structure exemplifies The Nest's commitment to sustainable development, breathing new life into a space while minimizing the carbon footprint associated with new construction. This approach not only conserves resources but also honors the historical fabric of the neighborhood, fostering a sustainable and resilient community."
